SUMMARY:A Night of Discovery: Highlights from the Night Walk at the Bergen Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Armed with flashlights\, around 600 guests attended the Night Walk at the Bergen Aquarium (Akvariet i Bergen) last Friday night where researchers from the Michael Sars Centre at the University of Bergen shared investigations into the impact of noise pollution and displayed various marine organisms including Ciona intestinalis\, Oikopleura dioica\, and Nematostella vectensis. \nSituated in the beautiful Aquarium rotunda\, the Chatzigeorgiou Group presented the Deuteronoise project\, investigating the impact of noise on marine life through an interactive quiz with different sounds recorded under the ocean’s surface. “Some of the kids (and adults) said that they were surprised by marine animal sound production. But they also believed\, with no doubt\, that noise pollution\, like other types of pollutants\, influences life in the ocean. For me\, this underlines how important our job is\,” said researcher Sissel Norland. The group’s station also highlighted two tunicate species\, Oikopleura dioica\, and Ciona Intestinalis\, with aquariums displaying their various life stages from larvae to adulthood. Children assumed the role of scientists as they peered through microscopes\, observing the Ciona larvae in motion. Meanwhile\, guests were invited to use magnifying glasses to take a closer look at the millimeter-sized Oikopleura displayed in a tall cylinder.

SUMMARY:Science for all 2023 event in Chioggia
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the Science for all 2023 event in Chioggia\, the teams of the three projects financed by JPI Oceans at the University of Padua—Deuteronoise\, Diaphonia\, and Orchestra—organized an experimential laboratory for children aged between 6 and 13 years old focusing on the sounds present in the sea and on the potential impact of man-made noise on marine animals. \nThe laboratory activity started by with having the children listen to and learn the sounds produced by whales\, fish\, molluscs\, and crustaceans and boats. \nThen\, a game was played by having a couple of children at opposite sides of the room say their favorite colors\, first against a silent background and then in the presence of noise produced by the other children speaking loudly\, clapping hands\, and stamping. This demonstrated the impossibility of communicating correctly with intense ambient noise. \nFinally\, using equipment purchased as part of the projects\, a tank with an underwater speaker was set up to make the children understand how sound in water is not only perceived as sound\, but also as particle motion\, and how this can heavily impact animals. At the end of the activities\, all the participants were invited to reflect on the impact of noise and the JPI Oceans projects were briefly discussed. \nWe aim to participate in the 2024 edition of Science for All to present the first results of the three projects.
